Zoo Aquarium De Madrid currently has two giant pandas, male panda Bing Xing and his female companion Hua Zuiba, both arrived at Zoo Aquarium De Madrid on September 8, 2007, for a 10-year stay as a part of the Giant Panda International Conservation Cooperation Project between China and Spain. The joint project was a goodwill gesture promised by the Chinese government during a visit by Spanish King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia to China in June 2007.

Bing Xing (male) was born on September 1, 2000, and his Chinese name 冰星, meaning "Star of Ice" in Chinese.

Hua Zuiba (female) was born on September 16, 2003, and her Chinese name 花嘴巴, meaning "Colorful Mouth" in Chinese. Both were born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China.

Both pandas are potentially reproductive, as Bing Xing has already fathered a twins in China, and Hua Zuiba has entered the estrous cycle at three and a half years old. Zoo Aquarium De Madrid hopes to see the birth of young panda in the future during their stay in Spain.

Actually, Bing Xing and Hua Zuiba are not the first pandas in Spain. Back in 1978, King Juan Carlos was presented a gift from the Chinese government, a couple of giant pandas, named Shao Shao and Chang Chang.

Shao Shao, a female panda, was born in captivity on September 18, 1975 at Beijing Zoo. Chang Chang, the male companion, was thought to be born around 1973 as he was captured. Shao Shao and Chang Chang arrived in Spain on December 24, 1978.
In 1982, Shao Shao became pregent, and gave birth to a twin on September 4, 1982 in Zoo Aquarium De Madrid, the male cup named Chu Lin, and his twin sister who died only 3 days after the birth. The twin was the first panda birth in Europe.

The mother Shao Shao died on October 23, 1983, just one year after giving birth to the twin. The father Chang Chang lived on for another 12 years in Zoo Aquarium De Madrid until he died in December 1995. His son Chu Lin died one year later in May 1996.

Madrid then had no pandas in its Zoo Aquarium De Madrid until September 2007 when Bing Xing and Hua Zuiba arrived.
